Alessandro Viola - wine producer

Alessandro Viola

Alessandro Viola | Alcamo | Italy

Alessandro Viola grew up surrounded by vines: his father was a vine grower, but apart from a few bottles of homemade wine, the fruit of the family’s labour rarely reached the bottle. Fascinated by grape growing from an early age, Alessandro first taught himself through several vintages and then took a formal route, studying oenology at university. There he turned away from purely mechanical approaches and focused on the science of winemaking, embracing the principle that, when grapes, soil and traditional techniques work in harmony, nothing needs to be added or removed from the wine.

After graduating, Alessandro gained experience in northern Italy and at a large producer on Mount Etna, yet he never forgot the small-batch wines he had previously produced by hand without additives. He began making wine for himself—initially in partnership with Uva Tantum—and now bottles under his own name, Alessandro Viola. He manages seven hectares of organically farmed vineyards, tended strictly by hand, to preserve soil health and grape quality.

Alessandro’s vineyards are split between two distinctive sites in western Sicily. The Pietra Rinosa estate near Alcamo sits at about 200 metres above sea level on clay-rich soils and benefits from strong maritime influence, producing wines with saline freshness and ripe fruit character. The Fastuchera parcels lie higher, around 400 metres, on calcareous soils that yield mineral-driven, finer-textured wines. These contrasting terroirs inform the style and balance of his range.

A staunch advocate for local grape varieties, Alessandro cultivates and champions Catarratto, Grillo, Nero d’Avola and Nerello Mascalese. His organic approach and commitment to zero additives—no adjustments or technological interventions—result in wines that express place and vintage with clarity. Magusto Wines is proud to import Alessandro Viola’s handmade, organically farmed wines to Australia, offering a distinctive expression of Sicilian terroir and sustainable viticulture.
