François Blanchard | Touraine | France
François Blanchard is a natural winemaker based at the historic Château du Perron near Lemere, about 40 minutes south of Tours. At his remarkable vineyard, Le Grand Clere, François cultivates a biodiverse ecosystem where vines grow over vines, fruit trees are interspersed throughout, and wildlife is actively encouraged to thrive. This holistic approach results in incredibly low yields and wines of intense, palate-saturating character. Planted with 45-year-old Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc on clay and large silex-rich soils, the vineyard is worked with minimal intervention, preserving the natural balance that shields it from pests and supports the health of the vines.
François’ path to natural winemaking is as distinctive as his wines. A former professional jazz musician in Tours, he returned over a decade ago to his family farm to embrace a self-sustaining agricultural lifestyle, growing vegetables, grains, and even producing lambic beer from his own cereals. His philosophy emphasises patience, respect for nature, and letting each plant and vintage develop organically, as exemplified by the 2014 vintage, which was spared pest damage thanks to the vineyard’s thriving biodiversity.
Le Grand Clere reflects François’ dedication, simplicity, and generosity—not only in the wines he produces, which are natural, expressive, and meticulously crafted, but also in the hospitality he extends to visitors. Tasting his wines is an immersive experience, offering both exceptional quality and a glimpse into a holistic, positive, and nature-driven approach to farming and winemaking.
