Jean-Pierre Robinot

Jean-Pierre Robinot | Loire Valley | France

Jean-Pierre Robinot: a name synonymous with authentic natural wine. Drawn to wine from a young age, Jean-Pierre moved to Paris where he connected with the pioneers of the natural wine movement. He opened one of the city’s first natural wine bars, L’Ange Vin, and launched France’s leading journal on the subject, Le Rouge et le Blanc. In the early 2000s he returned to his native village with his wife Noëlla to become a vigneron himself.

Today the Robinot family farms seven hectares across two Loire appellations — Jasnières and Coteaux-du-Loir. Their vines grow on a varied terroir of red clay, limestone and silex and are farmed organically. Treatments are minimal and plant-based: nettle and fern infusions are used instead of chemical inputs. While most wines are released under the L’Ange Vin label, grapes sourced from friends are occasionally bottled under the playful pseudonym L’Opéra des Vins.

Fermentation and élevage are rooted in tradition: wines ferment slowly in ancient limestone cellars beneath the vineyards, often taking months or even years to finish. The wines rest on lees in old barrels until Jean-Pierre — a true master of élevage — determines they have reached the right balance. Bottled with no additions, these wines display exceptional energy, poise and longevity; we’ve tasted vintages that rested for over a decade.

With daughter Juliette now working alongside Jean-Pierre in the vineyard, the legacy of one of the Loire’s most iconic natural wine producers continues to grow.
