Gut Oggau is a biodynamic wine project founded in 2007 by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe in the village of Oggau, Burgenland, Austria. After restoring a neglected 17th‑century cellar—including a 200‑year‑old screw press—the couple transformed the estate’s vineyards, which had been left fallow for 20 years. That period of neglect effectively washed away past pesticide and chemical residues, allowing Gut Oggau to adopt biodynamic practices from the outset. The estate is now fully Demeter certified.
In the cellar, Eduard and Stephanie discovered that each cuvée displayed a vivid, individual character. Inspired by those personalities, they developed a label concept that personifies each wine. Artist Jung von Matt illustrates a unique face for every bottle and each wine is named as a member of a fictional family. The range is grouped by character and vineyard style:
The children (Atanasius, Theodora, Winifred): light, bold, energetic wines with forward fruit and verve.
The parents (Joschuari, Emmeram, Timotheus, Josephine): wines from vineyards with greater sun exposure, offering riper fruit, more body and power.
The grandparents (Mechtild, Bertholdi): single‑vineyard bottlings from older vines, expressing the most traditional and ageworthy profile in the lineup.
Most Gut Oggau vineyards are field blends, so labels focus on character rather than varietal listing. Still, the estate works primarily with six main varieties: Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), and Gewürztraminer. These varieties, handled with minimal intervention in the cellar, produce expressive, terroir‑driven wines that reflect Gut Oggau’s biodynamic ethos.
Gut Oggau stands out for its commitment to regenerative farming, low‑intervention winemaking, and a branding approach that celebrates each wine’s individuality. The combination of restored historic infrastructure, Demeter certification, and a distinctive personality‑led range has made Gut Oggau a reference point for natural and biodynamic wines from Austria.
