José Carvalho made a remarkable impact on the wine world with his tiny but influential domaine, La Cave des Nomades, in Banyuls. In a relatively short time, he crafted some of the most sought-after natural wines coming from the south of France, earning acclaim for their elegance, minerality, and expression of dramatic terroir.

Originally from Portugal, José has lived and worked across Europe, but it was during repeated visits to Roussillon—often playing music on holiday—that he fell in love with the region. Captivated by its natural wine scene and the community of like-minded winemakers, he saved carefully and purchased a couple of hectares high in the hills above Banyuls, laying the foundation for La Cave des Nomades.

The vineyards sit in some of Europe’s most dramatic terroir. Dominated by schist soils, these hills produce wines with a rare combination of ripeness and maturity, balanced by freshness and striking minerality. For a region known for warmth and abundant sunshine, José Carvalho’s wines are particularly graceful and effortless, reflecting both the intensity of the landscape and the finesse of the winemaking.

José benefited from mentorship by some of Roussillon’s legendary growers. Among his close friends is Manuel di Vecchi Staraz of Vinyer de la Ruca, and together with other leading figures such as Bruno Duchene, he shared the renowned facility Les 9 Caves. This collaborative hub became a hotbed of talent, creativity, exceptional wine, and excellent food, fostering innovation across the region’s natural wine community.

Over time, José expanded his holdings, acquiring additional plots and even taking the lease on one of Alain Castex’s historic parcels. This allowed him to work with a mix of terroirs and a diverse range of both red and white grape varieties. His wines reflect a meticulous palate, patient craftsmanship, and forward-thinking approach, quickly becoming collector favorites and highly regarded among French vignerons.

Although José has concluded the Banyuls project to return to Portugal, his legacy remains in these highly prized wines. Fans and collectors alike eagerly anticipate his next venture, confident that his future winemaking will continue to combine innovation, terroir-driven elegance, and the same extraordinary quality that defined La Cave des Nomades.
