The 2024 Matassa Rouge is a bright, pure old-vine Carignan from Calce, Roussillon. From bush-trained vines (some ~100+ years) on limestone, schist and marl, exposed to cooling Tramontane winds, it keeps lively acidity and focused, concentrated fruit.
Fully destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and matured in concrete, clay amphorae and large neutral barrels, it’s bottled unfined, unfiltered and with minimal/no added sulphur. Lighter in color and more precise than Matassa’s whole-bunch styles, it still shows a rustic core.
Aromas and flavors: crunchy red cherry, cranberry, wild raspberry, dried herbs, black tea, cracked pepper and earthy spice. Gentle tannins, lively acidity and savoury drive make it very food-friendly. Serve slightly chilled or after some air. Pair with roast veg, grilled lamb, hard cheeses or a French-style cheeseboard. Elegant, energetic and easy to drink.
