Vicent Tomas &
Carmen Torres

Celler Tomas Torres | Valencia | Spain

Vicent Tomàs and Carmen Torres planted their vineyard nearly twenty years ago on the white chalk soils of Carrícola, about an hour south of Valencia. Today they farm 2.5 hectares that produce exceptionally good-value Mediterranean wines with a subtle saline character and appealing freshness.

The estate is planted mainly to Tempranillo, with Cabernet Sauvignon and local white varieties such as Tortosí and Tardana. Young vines are trellised and cane-pruned, while the older plantings are largely bush vines. Work in the vineyard is minimal, allowing the soils and vines to express their natural balance.

The vineyard’s fresh, white albarís soils create a striking contrast between expectation and reality: despite the region’s intense heat and bright light, the calcareous terroir brings levity and elegant acidity to the wines. This chalky substrate helps the grapes reach delicious maturity while retaining bright acidity and a saline minerality that define the estate’s signature style.

Vinification is straightforward and site-focused. Fermentation takes place in 700L plastic vats before the wines are pressed and transferred to fiberglass, stainless steel and occasionally barrel for élevage. For health reasons, Vicent recently entrusted winemaking to local vigneron Cris Vanyó of Cos a Cos. All wines in our most recent shipment (vintage 2023) were vinified by Cris; the results show precise, elevated winemaking while remaining deeply expressive of Carrícola’s unique terroir.
